A little about me…
I have two main writing interests.
Evidence Based Personal Development
Have you ever left the dentist’s office and vowed to floss every day?
How’s that going for you?
We have such medieval views on improvement – when we fail we think that if we somehow wanted it more, we’d succeed in this and a million other behaviors. And while the old self help books were filled with vague motivational advice, there’s been a paradigm shift. The New Self Help is treating the mechanisms of change as an emerging science – quantifying nebulous concepts like Willpower, Habit, and Grit.
In the summer of 2013 I started a blog detailing my own personal experimentation with evidence-based self improvement. It grew from recent struggles in becoming a better journalist and a far older desire to be a Renaissance Man. Why are driven people horrible at doing anything other than one or two skills? Why is it so hard to do even small tasks consistently over time? As a kid I wanted to do everything – can I master it all, or is being a jack of all trades the best I can hope for?
My writing here is a continuation of my thoughts and research.
Trying to be consistent in daily tasks is particularly difficult in light of my other interest….
I am an award-winning travel journalist and photographer. I’m a former columnist for National Geographic Traveller, a former photo editor and sourcer for USA Today, and my writing and photography have appeared in outlets like GQ, Vogue, Esquire, Lonely Planet, Time Out, Conde Nast Traveller and numerous in-flight airline magazines. My work has appeared in publications in the United States, UK, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, India, Singapore, Dubai, and Hong Kong.
I’ve also been an expat since 2008, when I first left my native Texas for Asia (though I make yearly pilgrimages to the glorious font of Tex Mex!). I’ve lived in 8 countries on 3 continents, traveled to 25, and had the opportunity to spend time in some truly exotic destinations like the Galapagos, Mongolia, Tibet, and a recent trip near the Arctic to see polar bears in the wild.
In the Travel Section you’ll see a lot of info on travel writing, some of my photography, and my travel adventures.
